Epiphany, Gifts, and a Grandson's Joy: A New Year's Resolution

Today marks Epiphany. Epipha-what? You’ve likely heard the term before. According to Merriam-Webster, epiphany has several meanings:

  1. A church festival commemorating the Magi’s visit as the first manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles or, in the Eastern Church, the baptism of Christ.

  2. An appearance or manifestation, especially of a divine being.

  3. A sudden realization or discovery, often sparked by a striking event.

We’ve all had those “aha!” moments when something clicks—a conversation becomes clearer, or a realization feels like a lightbulb turning on. In my church world, Epiphany marks the day the Magi, or wise men, presented their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the baby Jesus.

Do you know the significance of those gifts?

According to www.biblicalarchaeology.org, the gifts were chosen for their spiritual symbolism:

  • Gold represented Jesus' kingship.

  • Frankincense signified His priestly role, often used in religious ceremonies and as incense.

  • Myrrh prefigured His death and embalming, used for medicinal purposes and perfume.

The Magi risked their lives to deliver these offerings, and January 6th has long been celebrated as Día de los Reyes (Day of the Kings).

But for me, Epiphany carries a personal meaning—it’s the day my first grandson, Fionnlagh Rowan, was born. A true gift to Amanda, Shawn, and our entire family.

Happy birthday, Fionn!

Fionn is an incredible child—curious, fearless, and endlessly inquisitive. Even though he doesn’t speak yet, watching his mind work is amazing. Whether he’s figuring out how to open cupboards or attempting to climb the entertainment center, if there’s a will, Fionn will find a way!

This past year has had its ups and downs, but Fionn has been a constant reminder to live in the moment and appreciate life’s simple joys.

As we begin this new year, I’ve decided to start a new habit: daily journaling. Just a few lines each day to capture the highlights and lowlights—goals, wishes, accomplishments, and even heartaches. This practice will help me slow down and treasure the moments with Fionn, my wonderful family, and those yet to come.

My Challenge to You:

Take some time this week to reflect. What moments of clarity have shaped your life? What gifts—both tangible and intangible—can you celebrate today?

Let’s make 2025 a year of presence, gratitude, and discovery.

P.S. Picture is kinda scary – I was going for an excited look but I’m not sure that’s what we have here…
